AI Agent Cost: What Support Teams Pay

AI agent cost for support ranges from fixed subscriptions to per-outcome fees and metered runtime. For momo, paid plans cost $29, EUR 129 or EUR 399 per month; its Free plan costs EUR 0. If you are choosing a support desk, compare the billing unit as carefully as the headline price: seats, conversations, outcomes and model use can add up in different ways.

Intercom plan costs

Essential

Essential costs $29 per seat per month with annual billing, or $39 per seat per month when billed monthly. There is a one-seat minimum. For a small team, that makes the seat subscription a separate base cost from Fin: each billable Fin outcome adds $0.99. The seat price is not a ceiling on the total if the AI handles many billable outcomes.

Advanced

Advanced costs $85 per seat per month with annual billing, or $99 per seat per month when billed monthly. It also has a one-seat minimum. Fin remains an additional $0.99 per outcome, including assumed resolutions and completed procedures. Optional Copilot costs $29 per agent per month with annual billing or $35 monthly. Copilot includes ten free conversations per agent per month, after which the paid add-on terms apply.

Expert

Expert costs $132 per seat per month with annual billing, or $139 per seat per month when billed monthly. It has a one-seat minimum, and Fin outcome fees remain separate. The available pricing evidence also lists Proactive Support Plus at $99 per month, including 500 messages; additional messages are charged per message, starting at $0.07 and falling to $0.0175 at high volume. These are optional costs, not part of the seat price.

Inbound email and live chat are included on every plan. SMS, WhatsApp campaigns, phone and bulk email can carry pay-as-you-go charges. Intercom offers a 14-day free trial without a credit card, but not a free plan. Before comparing a quote, separate the seat bill, Fin outcomes, optional add-ons and channel usage. A team should also check which outcome definitions apply to its own conversations: the same conversation may contain several customer questions, while billing rules are based on recorded outcomes rather than simply counting every question.

$0.99

Fin’s outcome fee sits on top of seats and add-ons

At 5,000 outcomes in a month, the AI charge alone is $4,950, before the human-support seats or optional add-ons. Intercom says teams can set a monthly outcome limit. Estimate outcome volume from your support history, then add the seat bill separately to understand the full cost.

Separate the outcome bill from the seat subscription and optional add-ons before estimating a monthly total.

Worked cost examples

A worked Intercom example: same outcomes, different seat counts

The calculation below uses Intercom Essential and 5,000 Fin outcomes each month, the volume shown in the pricing evidence. The outcome charge is $0.99 each, so the AI portion is $4,950 per month, or $59,400 over a year. This is an illustration, not a forecast of a typical support team. It excludes Copilot, Proactive Support Plus and pay-as-you-go channel usage.

For a solo user, the Essential seat adds $39 on monthly billing to the $4,950 outcome charge. With annual seat billing, the seat price is $29 monthly, added to the same outcome charge; over a year, the seat costs $348 and Fin costs $59,400. These totals are illustrations calculated from the stated seat and outcome rates.

For a five-person team, monthly seat charges are five times $39, or $195, in addition to the $4,950 outcome bill. With annual seat billing, five seats cost $145 per month on the annual rate; the yearly seat cost is $1,740, in addition to the $59,400 outcome charge.

For a ten-person team, monthly seats cost $390, in addition to the $4,950 outcome charge. Annual seat billing costs $290 per month at the annual rate; over a year, ten seats cost $3,480 and outcomes cost $59,400. These examples show how the bill changes with seat count even when outcome volume stays fixed.

These totals make the billing units visible: the same outcome volume outweighs the seat charge in each example. A monthly outcome limit can cap Fin usage, but it is still important to estimate volume using your own support history. Review how outcomes are defined and whether your expected conversations could be counted as billable results. This is especially useful when comparing per-outcome pricing with a subscription that includes a set conversation allowance.

When the price is worth it

A per-outcome model can make the AI charge track recorded results rather than team size. It can also make the total grow quickly when outcomes are high. A flat plan fee with included conversations is easier to forecast against the allowance, though teams still need to choose a tier that fits their use. momo’s paid plans cost $29, EUR 129 or EUR 399 monthly, with 500, 2,000 or 6,000 AI conversations respectively. The helpdesk inbox is included at every plan level, and no per-resolution fee is charged.

Custom agents have a different cost structure. One estimate puts a simple single-workflow build at about $10,000, mid-complexity builds at $50,000 to $150,000, and enterprise multi-agent systems at $150,000 to $400,000 or more. These are build estimates, not support-desk subscription prices. After launch, costs can include model tokens, compute, storage, monitoring, prompt tuning, security upkeep, maintenance and team training. Requesting a quote for a hosted support tool and budgeting for a custom build should therefore be treated as separate decisions.

What drives AI agent cost beyond the plan price?

Start by identifying what the vendor meters: seats, conversations, outcomes, or model and infrastructure use. A per-seat plan tends to vary with team size, while a per-outcome fee varies with the number of recorded results. A plan with an included conversation allowance has a defined usage boundary; check the allowance against your own support volume before choosing a tier. For a custom agent, the workflow and connected systems influence the build, while actual activity affects ongoing runtime costs.

What hidden costs should you check?

For hosted support software, list the base subscription separately from outcome fees, optional add-ons and pay-as-you-go channels. For a custom build, budget separately for the initial development and ongoing model use, hosting or compute, retrieval storage, integrations, monitoring, testing, maintenance and training. These are distinct cost categories, not interchangeable price quotes. Ask what is included, what triggers an extra charge, and how usage is measured. Then compare like billing units and currencies, rather than treating a headline price as a complete monthly total. This gives a more useful estimate and helps reveal whether a low base price could be accompanied by substantial usage charges.

Choose an AI agent pricing approach

The right cost model depends on whether you buy a support desk, pay for outcomes or build and operate an agent yourself. Compare recurring subscription costs with usage-based charges and custom-build budgets.

AI agent cost FAQs

Know which bill each price belongs to before you choose a support agent.

What pricing models do AI agents use?

Common models include a fixed subscription, per-seat charges, per-conversation or per-task allowances, per-outcome fees, and token or compute charges for agents you build. Some products combine a platform fee with usage charges. Compare the unit being billed and what happens when included usage runs out.

How much does Intercom Fin cost per outcome?

Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, on top of Intercom’s human-support seat plan. The pricing rules include assumed resolutions and completed procedures; the actual total also depends on the number of seats and any add-ons or pay-as-you-go channel usage.

What makes AI agent costs rise as usage grows?

Outcome fees rise with billable outcomes, while usage-metered agents can incur more model calls, tokens, compute, storage or API requests as activity increases. A single request may involve actions, retries and follow-up work. For a plan with included conversations, monitor the allowance and select a tier that fits the expected volume.

What hidden costs should I budget for when building an AI agent?

A custom build can bring costs beyond the initial development work: model use, hosting, retrieval storage, monitoring, integrations, maintenance, testing and training. The amount depends on workflow complexity, volume and the systems involved. Treat any build estimate separately from the ongoing operating budget.

How is an AI agent subscription different from build and runtime costs?

A subscription pays for access to a hosted product, sometimes with a defined amount of usage included. Build costs cover creating a custom agent, while runtime costs arise as it uses models, infrastructure and connected tools. A custom agent can therefore have both an upfront build bill and ongoing operating costs.
